Electrical Vs Mechanical Gauges

i got my self 89 RS and i was thinking to upgrade the gauge panels, while im searching for the right 2 1/16 gauges i dont know if i go to electrical or mechanical, the panel have 6 holes, two 3 3/8 and four 2 1/16(CCL-110-82-50921 says : accept 2 5/8 while when i searched for info's in summit they said : 2 1/16 ! anyone know about this one?)and i really dont know about the mechanical one's or the electrical one's will work fine without facing a big problem in fixing it,the gauges are tachometer 8.000rpm in dash, speedometer 160mph prgrammable electric, oil pressure, water temp, oil temp and transmission temp, wich ones will work fine and fit on the camaro electrical or mechanical? and plz share me some info's about what are the diffrent between them i know its a stupid Q's but i need help in my camaro

Tachs are pretty much all electric, unless you have a tach-drive distributor, which you don't. Your 89 RS has a mechanical speedometer , but the VSS for the ECM is driven by it, so you'd need to figure out some way to replace the VSS no matter what you do. For the rest of the gauges, I'd go electric. With mechanical gauges, you'd have to run capillary tubes through the firewall, which can be awkward. You could just replace the factory gauge senders for the oil pressure and water temp gauges, but you'll have to drill holes in the oil pan and possibly the transmission pan for temperature senders for those.

I don't know if it's an oversight, but you didn't mention anything about a fuel gauge.

oh damn i forgot about that,my bad bro.ok the car isn't fuel anymore its carburetor Q-jet,in summit i found a fuel level gauge but i dont know wich one will work fine, here are the options
fuel level,most GM after 1965
fuel level,most pre-1965 GM
fuel level, universal stepper(its says needs a full sweep, what does that means)
so wich one will work with factory parts?
and about the trans' temp i dont need it i dont want to make holes in oil pan and i guess the oil pressure need to drill a hole in the oil pan to work

The post-1965 fuel level gauge should work, just make sure it's for a 90 ohm sender.

A trans temp sender can also be installed in the cooler lines if you're willing to do a little plumbing. There aren't really any convenient locations to do that with an oil temp sender though. An oil pressure sender will screw into the block in place of the factory sender with no problem.

Well if it was up to me, I'd keep the stock gauges.

There are definite issues. It is not an easy swap at all. It would be easier to swap the entire dash from the older camaro.

Just a piece of advice, changing all the guages gets expensive. I spent about $800 I think. Then I had to custom make a bunch of stuff.

Apeiron is right, go with all electric guages. I did. Exept one, but that is cuz I got it off ebay.

The main rule to remember is: You can allways do whatever you want when talking about custom stuff.

There is no easy answer to changing all the guages.

Here is a pic of my set up right before I finally bolted it all in. I made the panel that I mounted it all in.

wow man u got a great job there
ok what if i only custom the panel to fit autometer gauges?
i dont want to change all the dashboard just for gauge's !
a custom made panel with two 5" and four 2 1/16's are good right?
how big are the diffrence between 2 5/8 and 2 1/16 in size with one is the perfect for a custom panel?
and what are those green lights and the blue one?
and more thing can u plz give me the link for ur file in cardomain?

^^^ That is my cardomain site. Check it out.

Those are (2) 5", (5) 2 5/8, and (2) 2 1/16. Those are Auto meter phantom guages.

The whole dash is not custom. It is just the panel that holds the guages. The rest looks custom because I covered the dash in fabric.
----------
the green lights are the turn signal indicators and the blue is the high beam indicator. The guages look very nice when all lit up. I will get some pics of that tonight.

They even dim like stock, with the dimmer switch.

After you check out my site and read it all. Let me know what specific questions you have.... I can fill you in on anything, but make sure that you are very specific. I think custom guages are one of the nicest things the inside of these cars can have.

My mufflers are Dynomax Bullets 4" diameter.

I made my exhaust myself. Took only 2 days.

Any other questions, let me know.
