Need help with alternator wiring. What do these wires do?

Can someone tell me where the 3 wires go to from the plug that goes into the back of the alternator and what is their purpose? I have one thick red wire, and 2 blown wires. See attached pic.

This is for an 87 TPI car.

Many thanks,

Robert

Are there any other wires on the alternator? (shouldn't be). Most alternators have a thick red "+ out" wire, and a pair of thinner field wires that have to be energised for the alt to work (should go on with ignition).

I know on the '72 GTO I was rewiring over the weekend the alt and starter shared a heavy wire that seemed to terminate right on the battery. Not sure about that yet but they definitely appear to share a cable. That's your red wire. But normally that's a ring terminal not a plug. The field wires are however normally in a plug. Not sure which is supposed to be positive and I'm not sure (positive? ha) that it matters.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding something, I tend to feel like I might be insulting you to give you the complete explanation as I would expect someone with a car like that do know that.
