hatch pull down

so when i closed my hatch yesterday (went to a movie and had to put my t-tops in) and came back to it the light in the hatch was still on so i checked it and my pull down unit was pulling the hatch down. so today i took a look at in and put a little wd40 on the shaft that pulls the unit down in the center and now it just cycles like crazy it doesnt pull the unit down but sounds like it is so i just unplugged it but what i want to know is that if there is a part i can just replace instead of spending the 300 dollars for a brand new unit. and yes i did search and didnt find i similar problem. thanks.

If you hear the motor but it's not pulling down, it's most likely a stripped gear.
You can buy the gear for a few bucks online but if you don't want to deal with taking the whole thing apart and reassembling it, you can just buy a used hatch pulldown for maybe $40.

Hope this helps.
