How do you check the starter/solenoid assembly ?

This is what happened:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...tart-died.html

First time I banged it with a rubber mallet, plus applied 12V from the battery, since tapping it wouldn't start it. After power and still a lot of banging it finally started.

Later on I was going to do the same thing, so I put power to the terminal o nthe starter, reached for my rubber mallet, and all of a sudden the thing started spinning and the cranking and the car started.

So how do you check the assembly, once it's out of the car ? I bought a started/solenoid assembly today, but I'm not 100 percent sure whether the problem is right there or if it's the wiring ?

If you apply 12V to the S terminal on the starter, and it starts, it would mean a problem with the wiring, correct, not the starter itself ? i.e. if it starts without hitting/banging the starter ?
