Wont start..HELP!

Ok so i just put a new starter in my car because the other one was making the grinding sound like it was gone. I used a battery from my friends car and I got the car started the other day. I had to fix the timing of my camshaft so off came the cover and I fixed the timing. I have those gears instead of a timing chain. Now I went to go start it and it makes the grinding sound again. Can someone help?

Couple of things with starter noise...

Were there any shims left over from the starter replacement? It may be a matter of getting the starter gear lined up with the flywheel - could take some playing around.

An intermittent starter noise could be a bad spot on the flywheel. Remove the flywheel cover and inspect all the teeth.
Good Luck,
Corky

The flywheel is fine, I know this because it does turn and everything and none of the teeth look chewed up. I think it may be the shims because I used the shims from the other starter when I installed this one. I was told to take the shims out because I might not need them and it could be messing with it.
