NO Brake Lights, need help before i get a ticket!!!!!

Hey, i've recently discoverd a problem with my 85 IROC. I keep losing my brake lights. I first pulled the bulbs and found they were both blown wich i thought was very odd, so i changed them and still didnt work. So i checked the fuse and that was blown. Replaced it and still nothing. So the only other thing i could think of was the brake light switch, so i removed it. I ended up pulling it apart and found that it was blown apart inside as well. So i replaced the switch and the lights worked. Now two weeks later i have no lights again.....Any suggestions on what to look for here and where? I'm figuring there has to be a short somewhere, but if there was wouldnt it just blow everything out right away once i stepped on the brakes?? Thanks

I know this is a dumb question but are you using the correct bulbs? 1157? My POS Haynes doesn't have WD for the brake/rear lighting.
