ECM wiring a is a disaster
ECM wiring a is a disaster
I bought my 86 Camaro (Sports Coupe) a few months back; I haven't been able to spend much time working on her until recently, but am looking forward to getting it legal.
Either the kid I bought it from, or the owner before him had done some strange things to it. An Edelbrock carb and intake manifold have been installed, along with Hedman headers, an Accel distrib, a new (but cheap) alternator and the valve covers off a 350 even though it's a 305.
The big problem is that most sensors have been disconnected and the wiring is all mangled up. The ECM is not hooked up at all, and the electronic choke on the carb is missing. I've got frayed wires going from the alt right to the distrib. :-/
In other words, the engine is running entirely mechanically, and aside from the cat, has no emissions controls.
I was thinking that I could pick up a refurbished Edelbrock Performer carb from jegs instead of trying to hunt down small parts. After that, I'm a bit confused as far as what to do about the wiring and emissions stuff, so here's the question I've been leading up to:
Can anyone suggest a resource (website, book, brain implant, or even someone local who's willing to help) that could help guide me through what needs to be done to get everything back to how it should be?
It seems to me that it would be simpler to scrap what's in there now, and buy all new wiring almost like I had a stripped down chassy and a crate engine, and needed to install the rest.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
