VSS/SPEEDO PROBLEM PLEASE HELP!!
I need help!! I'm having a real problem with my speedo/vss on '87 GTA 5.7 TPI Auto. I've thrown good money after bad on this... no fix! When I start, speedo is dead, 10-15 mins later, check engine comes on, speedo comes on and starts jumping, shortly thereafter, car goes in what I beleive is called 'limp mode' in 3rd gear.. lousy driving this way!.. only accelerates if I floor it!. I can fix this be pulling out 10amp fuse under 'gauges' but then I lose entire cluster and it runs/idles rough but at least no limp mode! what a trade off!.. anyway my question is: seeing as for the first 10-15 mins I get no signal from the vss to speedo (and the cars runs perfect with dead speedo), why not just cut that wire from vss to speedo and problem solved (i can live without speedo).. your thoughts? Can I do this? thank you

Before you start snipping wires, keep in mind that permanently disabling your VSS is a very bad thing. Not only will it give you a continual Code 24 SES light, but it may result in more extensive transmission problems. If you have the 700R4 automatic, your ECM uses input from the VSS (among other sensors) to control TCC.
I don't know about the stuck in 3rd gear bit. I've havent seen a table for shift points in my Bin for my 89 Formula 350 (AUJM). I always thought downshifts were controled by the Throttle valve cable.
