You do know you could just swap in a V8 8000RPM tach? We are talking about stock tachs, right? I have for sale if you really need one, PM me for details.

8000 techs

I'm still kinda new here so take it easy on me fellas, but most of the firebirds and trans ams mostly had 6,000 techs ,because of the 305 carbs and TBI's. AT least most of them I ever saw. I think that Gm started using 8,000 Techs after 1987. When They started using alot more 350's. Most of the time when I went to the junk yard to look for more parts. Most of the firebirds had 6,000 techs v6 and v8 models. But I would to keep looking more into the 87-92 for 8,000 techs. Then I would into an after market tech if your looking into a 8,000 tech. Probably try sun pro or auto meter gauges

yeah i dont want an aftermarket guage i got enough extra guages of the window pillar i had my speedo recalibrated and refaced from 85 - 160 mph. i figured since it could be done then a tach could be done too. the only thing is i had it done through f body motorsports and it was apart of their catalogue. i wanted to know if anyone knew of a shop that could do this for a tach. thanx

About Gauges.

Well Buddy, If You Have a 383 Stroker Motor in Their. Well Most Likely I think You Shouldn't have To Recalibrate the Tech, But Find an 8,000 rpm Gauge out of a later model Trans Am. Try a GTA, I notice from my old 86 trans am there was only a 6,000 like yours, but when I went out and found this GTA it had an 8,000 Tech. Since I found out through the restoration co's, most Ta's and firebirds mostly had a 305 they mostly used a 6,000 Tech. I also notice thier is not much between the 305 and 350 blk, except the 305 was more torque, and the 350 has a lot more RPM. I think also the 383 has a lot more RPM. So I hear what you are saying, but in my opinion I think if you want to recalibrate the tech, their really ain't going to be much different in your 6,000. If you find an 8,000 Tech out of a later one I think that the 350 and the 383 are going to be very close to the same. If you want to really want to find a shop I think maybe you should try to talk to someone at a performance shop and they could find someone to recalibrate the one you want done. I wish I could help you out more there.

crazy bill thanx for the info. but a later model 8000 tach will not look the same as my other guaghes since they have the early 82-84 style guages in them. the background and font is different. i figured that id have to go to a performance shop of some sort but i tought that i should check here first.

I don't know if this would work but, take the 8k tach from a newer 85+ (my 87 has one), dissassemble then, reassemble using the newer (8k) tach guts with the original face & needle

i thought about this then i realized that it wouldnt work since the the position of the numbers are different. mine goes 3/4 circle and the other one only goes a little over halfway and the zero mark is at 6 o'clock and mine is at 7 or so thanx anyway though
