never grab hot wires...
i have recently perchased a 91 firbird rs from a used car dealer. though the body and engine are in good condition the display lights are currently not funtioning due to wireing issues. the previous owner spliced a red and a black wire together and ran it straight to the battery. wen i first looked at the car i poped the hood and began to chek it over. while it was open i noticed smoked riseing from around the battery. thats wen i noticed the red wire comeing from the body. i pulled it and broke the connection and now the lights no longer work obviously. waht should i do to repari them??

All circuits need protection. Inline fuse, fusable link, circuit breaker ... anything.
The color of wires are meaningless when it comes to people jerry rigging your car. You need to utilize a multimeter and find the voltage of the red wire, then black wire. Turn on the ignition and do the same. Then disconnect the battery and touch the multimeter on the red wire then to ground. The black wire then to ground.
Let us know what you come up with. Good luck dude.
