What kind of Ignition setup is everyone running?

I am just curious to see what most people are running, probably some type of electronic setup if I had to guess. Anyways, I am running an old-style points ignition. I had to go with this instead of a simple electronic ignition because my intake gets in the way of the larger one with the built-in coil. So what does everyone else have?

If you are running points and carby then you must not be using an ECM computer, the ECM regulates the timing advance so a stock in-coil or the smaller external coil HEI wil not work. I would either keep it like it is or using a points trigger you can still use Crane or MSD multi spark analog ignition.
I use a Crane Hi6, it looks pretty, I later found out that I had gained zip.

there are HEI distributors that have everything built in. all you have to do is connect a +12v wire to it, set the timing, connect vacuum advance, and that's it. there is no external coil or controller needed.

In my 84 I've got an MSD E-Curve distributor, an MSD 6AL, and a Blaster SS coil. The 88 is all stock HEI.

Re: What kind of Ignition setup is everyone running?

I was looking at the MSD 6A... what kind of a difference does it make for performance and cranking, if any?

Re: What kind of Ignition setup is everyone running?

points is not electronic

points was before 1975

1975 and up was HEI

High Energy Ignition
large style in-cap

i think you guys are confusing things up here

if he cant fit a 75 and up HEI then he wont be able to use that red HEI one in the pic above either

he has some kind of clearance issue under the hood for some reason apparently

and why he called points an electronic ignition is beyond me

please elaborate

they do have kits to convert the old 74 and older points dizzies over the electronic, it includes a magnetic pickup and coil and such to replace the physical contact points pieces

hotrodders have been using these kits for decades

good luck

I never said I was running an electronic points setup.. I am running points, plain and simple, I just mentioned that I wanted to run the electronic but was unable to because the wider distributor hits my aluminum intake. I guess the intake was made before HEI and they just made sure that standard points distributors fit. I think that I am going to swap intakes soon so I can swap to an HEI. Is the performance increase of HEI over points worth the swap?

Re: What kind of Ignition setup is everyone running?

MSD ProBillet Dist. MSD 8.5 Wires MSD 6AL Ignition MSD Blaster2 Coil I have used Accel wires and cap and coil back when it was a 305 and the wires were junk. Dont waste your $ on them. Thats why every auto-parts retailer has them. MSD I have on the TA and the S10. They are great. Ive also run Taylor 8mms B4 on the TA and I wouldnt hesitate to run them again. IMO/experience the coil isnt a big deal of improvement until the upper RPM range. The ignition weather a MSD, Mallory or Crane is worth it. Distributors either a MSD or Mallory is top notch.

Started the process of changing from a stock HEI to a MSD pro billet distributor, Digital 6 box, and blaster 2 coil.
