Speed Limiter/Governor delete

Alright, I have a 1991 Camaro RS L03/T5 and my governor kicks in at 115mph. How do I eliminate this? Is there an easy way without reflashing my ECM? Or is it possible to "open"(toggle switch inline w/ speed sensor) until past the limited speed and close the switch to have a functioning speedo 116+mph? I have heard tidbits about a Zemco unit that does what I want, but cannot find one, or even who sells them. let alone the instructions I can find, all have to do w/ automatics. If there is a way, does it throw a Check eng. light? Is there an optional ECM some year that doesn't have this? Do the TPI/carb/MPFI vehicles have the same limited speed?

I know that some vehicles can be driven over the limited speed in direct drive then shifted into O/D or w/ an auto put into O/D. But that doesn't work on my vehicle. Direct drive ends ~110 and the governor is set at 115.
thanks in advance.

Do you need to go faster than 115?

The only way I know of is by reprogramming a chip.

Does anybody NEED to go faster than 75? I just wanna know if there's an easy way, or if it requires a reprogrammed chip. I can setup wiring harnesses, fix electrical problems and what not. I just don't wanna have to dig through EWD's to figure out signal wave patterns, if it's bypassable or what all my VSS is connected to.

Basically, Has anyone done this? Know how to, have the same problem or willing to try?

i heard of somebody just riging a togle switch up inline with the speed sensor and when you wanna go fast just flip the switch and its off. but then you done have a speedo either.i'm sure there is a way to eliminate the governer but it will most likely involve the computer, not just adding or removeing something.

Really, do you need to go that fast? I mean you already had an oops with your car, so count that up to a close call. You think a accident at 115+ is gonna be fun?

My '89 celica could go faster. Enough said. though it was at redline in 5th gear at 122.
And I am more curious b/c I want to play w/ my car. If I switch over to a 350TBI, am I going to have the same governor? I'd rather just eliminate it. The less big brother has programmed into my vehicle the better.
No, I'm not that retard that does 100+ in suburban streets, I just wanna be able to hold a speed that's respectable. For the love of all that's holy, I couldn't keep up w/ two of my classmates in n/a eclipse/talons b/c they could hold 120-140 on a trip south. They're front wheel drive and "ricers" they aren't supposed to be able to achieve higher speeds than me.

Bottom line: The speed limiter is in the chip, and the best way to remove it is to find someone to burn you a new custom chip without it. A "Hypertech" or "JET" chip off the shelf will still have the speed limiter in it.

The only reason I could see removing the limiter is if your trap speeds are higher than said limited speed. Nobody should be going in excess speeds on the streets (I'll admit I've hit well over 100 a couple times on empty freeways).

my car was origionally a 305tpi and i had the speed limiter at 110mph. Before I got my 350 and new chip, I hooked up a switch to the vss input to the computer. I cut the wire, ran one up to a switch to my console and back to the computer, u wana go over 110, you flip the switch, disable the vss and then its shuts the speedo off so you can go faster than 110, you just dont know how fast you going and neither does the computer.

Only thing is before I did it i read it can cause your computer to go bad faster than usual due to more resistance in the vss. After about 3 months, my computer did crap out. I dont know if it was from the vss OR from being 12 years old or more. Either way, this will work but the correct way to do it is to get a new chip. Hope that helped?

works for me. Thanks, that's what I wanted to know... basically. I don't like the idea of killing my computer though. eventually, I would like to convert it over to a 350 TBI, break it in and switch to a true fuel injection setup. I'm not set on any plan yet, but I'd like to see if the car would still pull decently through 5th gear, instead of only getting +5-10mph. Are all the TPI cars limited at 110? I have a "superchip" brand chip in it now(came in it when purchased), might that be why it's higher than your 305 TPI??

Or you can buy this and lower your fan temp and whatever else you want to do.

Re: Speed Limiter/Governor delete

sounds great, and looks affordable. I'm converting to (real) fuel injection later but thanks for the link. Though I haven't decided what system I want to use yet.
