The last thing my mechanic said...

...before he left for the day was "your starter isn't getting a full 12 volts".

What are some of the most common issues that could cause this? Could any of the switches/relays in the car be an issue? Like maybe the clutch safety switch or something?

Thanks,

Scott

Corrosion on the terminals of the starter or battery. That or your battery cable is shot, which is unlikely.

New battery and new starter. Hmm, battery cable. Could I just get a spare cable and go from battery to starter or would that fry something? If it is the cable, is that placed in a direct route to the starter or is it a pain like everything else?

Thanks again.

New battery and starter? Make sure the connectors are tight. You can run a spare cable to go from battery to starter, but why would you?

How about you get a digital multimeter and check voltage and battery and starter? Sounds like the only sure fire way to know what's happening. Also, a slight voltage drop is normal- you'd need to know numbers to see if there's a problem or not.

Just to see if the positive cable was bad no?

What about a big spaghetti incident under the dash, could the have anything to do with the starter not getting the juice it needs?

Thanks

Depends on what your mechanic meant by his statement. Is it the solenoid purple wire (comes from the dash) or is it the big post on the starter with the big wires (comes from the battery)?

If it's the purple wire that doesn't get full 12V, then it could easily be a problem in the dash. May it be the clutch starter safety switch, ignition cylinder, fuses, whatever else. If it's the big black wire, it might be the battery terminals or just oxidation on the wire, as has been pointed out already.

Hope this helps.

Check your cables that go to the battery. Is it frayed, loose, or cut in any way? Is it touching anything but the hold down point? It is possible that the cable is shorting through the dielectric and shielding to the chassis, exhaust...or anything it touches.

Do you have anything else hooked directly to the battery? If you have anything that is hooked in line directly to the battery that is accidentally grounding out, it could take voltage away from the starter. The main power cable to the starter is a direct shot with I believe. I do think there is one power tap on it though...as I recall on mine without actually going out to look at it.
