I did the resistor bypass a few weeks ago on a 1989 Camaro RS. I went to a local install shop and had them check the restistance of the key, and buy the resistor. They said it is within the tolerance range. Then two days ago the car would not start and the security stayed on. It did start after the four minute reset. I saw a post by Vader explaining the system. My question is about this quote "If an incorrect resistance is detected by the VATS module after the engine is running, the VATS module will allow the vehicle to be restarted, even with an existing failure. The SECURITY lamp will remain on to warn the driver that a VATS system fault is present. However, this also means that the car can be started w/o a correct key resistance, and is therefore vulnerable to theft." is it possible to purposely put the system in this mode?

If you wanted to yes. It would only last until the battary was disconnected or went dead. Just start the car and remove the bypass resistor.

You know I heard how expensive the keys for the VATS setup were. So I went to the local hardware store with the resistance of my key and the info sheet that basicly told me my resistor was #6 and had them order me a key. They wouldn't gaurantee it would work without testing my key in the machine, which they don't have anyway. Well for $16.49 plus tax I got a key that works perfectly, and get to keep my vehicle protection. This was at Best Buy if that helps.

Do what I found in my 89...A VATS key soldered to the 2 appropriate wires! So, by using a regular key, it doesn't use a VATS key to start the car anymore!

go to ebay they have a resistor that bypasses the whole system no resistor needed. or you can make your own.
