Need to add A/C relay

I am adding a relay for the compressor on my car. The reason for this is because my compressor is pulling too much electrical power. What would be the best way to wire it? I am going to use one of the oval style relays like the ones that came on my car and place it next to the high speed blower relay. My plan is to wire it after the pressure switch and before the clutch(obviously). Would it hurt anything powering the relay with battery constant power instead of an ignition powered source? Does anyone have a schematic of this or suggestions?

Re: Need to add A/C relay

There are COUNTLESS MILLIONS of cars on the road, that don't need anything of the kind. It seems quite difficult to believe that yours is the only one, out of all those millions the world over, that needs this.

If this thing is REALLY "pulling too much power", I'd suggest repairing it, rather than hacking on it and adding unnecessary parts.

See my signature for helpful advice. Somehow, the "too much power" explanation doesn't seem to pass the test it contains.

Define repair. I am using a compressor from a car that originally had a relay. There are countless numbers of GM vehicles on the road that use just such a relay to lessen the load on the electrical system.

Re: Need to add A/C relay

Repair = find and eliminate the REAL problem

No GM cars from the era of these had relays, except for the "climate control" ones. And those didn't have them because of the load. In NO CASE, would a relay "decrease the load on the electrical system"; the current to operate the device still has to come from somewhere, and it will still require the same amount of current. All that a relay will do, is to reroute the load. It will not "decrease" it.

If you have the usual R-4 compressor, the clutch only draws about 8-10 amps.

What's REALLY going on?

Re: Need to add A/C relay

As stated in my signature the compressor and the entire engine is from a 95 Corvette. These cars do have a relay because their compressors do pull more power. I am merely looking for the best way to wire a relay for this. The line pressures and freon content is to spec for the Corvette. If anyone has a schematic for this type of relay I would appreciate it. I lost the schematic I had saved and I have not been able to find it.

I would also like the high pressure switch explained if possible. Mine is not hooked up right now and I would like to implement its function into my system.
