Car won't start...safety feature?

If I get the car to turnover once, the car will start. After this start I can get it to turnover as many times as I want. Battery is new, alternator is new, and I know the starter is fine. However, if I get to the car after a long sitting I can't even get it to turnover. I am thinking I've run into a safety feature. I took the car in and out of gear several times but I can't even get a click. What to do?

This has happened a few times recently. Normally, I just wait a min or two and it will fire.

EDIT: Also I notice that my engine temp sensor is bad. It doesn't read anything when driving, but it pings all the way to the top on a start. Is this normal?

Re: Car won't start...safety feature?

What year is your car? I have a 91 and it does it sometimes. I use my extra key and it works fine. I think the 90-92 camaro's have the chip in the key, which sometimes won't read and therefore won't let the car start. The chevy dealer wants $45 to make a new key or you can buy the whole ignition key switch from an auto parts store for $50. There are 2 wires you can disconnect to disable the key chip feature and then you can buy the ignition for an 82-89 model for $10. I'm not sure what two wires to disconnect, I'm trying to find out myself so I can do it to mine.

Do a search for the VATS, Vehicle Anti-Theft System. There is a resistor in your Key. The Computer looks to see that it matches the correct value for your ignition if not the computer disables the starter and the injectors.

Either way your ignition switch is going bad or your key is dirty, either way the car may not start. Clean the key wait 5 minutes and try again.

Re: Car won't start...safety feature?

I have this problem with my 84 z28 L69/T5 car. i have disabled the clutch safety switch but that didn't help. I just turn the key and nothing turns over.

If I bump start the car (rolling it and dumping the clutch) it will start and start up again after that.. it seems that once the circuit get energized it stay good for a while. But will come back again sooner or later.

I have this probem at random time and have not figured it out either. 84's don't have the VAT system .. so that is not my problem..
