A little more info on what you're trying to accomplish would be helpful.

Re: using HEI distributor

well i took out all my TPI wiring harness and going with a Carb motor.using a HEI distributor u only need that one wire to turn on the coil. and id rather just use a hidden toggle switch to turn it on instead of hunting the ignition wire that goes from the key to the coil. so basically im just wantin to use a toggle switch to turn on a HEI coil..what gauge wire should i use and what amp switch and use a fuse or not?

Re: using HEI distributor

Just use the wire that supplied power to the stock HEI.

Yes, and that engine came with an HEI distributor. Every Chevy V8 with a distributor from 1975 had an HEI distributor.

Re: using HEI distributor

No, HEI is just a marketing name for all GM's electronic ignition distributors, which came in a variety of shapes and styles.

You can't use the original computer controlled distributor with a non-computer carb, but you can reuse some of the wiring. You don't need to take out the whole harness.

You'll find it. If not, you could find it under the dash on the other side of the firewall.
