Speedometer problem

I drive a 1991 RS, auto, and my speedometer pretty much died. It will work very intermittently, and when it does, it bounces around like crazy. My car uses an electronic speedometer, so my question now is, which part do I need? When looking, I've found two parts

and

And I'm not sure which I need? How can I check, is there even a way to? I pulled the dash apart, and it's all on one connector for the entire cluster, so it's got to be the sensor, I'm just confused as to which one I need?

Thanks guys.

The VSS sensor is in the transmission. Go to your local GM dealer and ask them what part you need.

Yes, I know the vehicle speed sensor is in the transmission. That, unfortunately, was not my question.
