Re: battery will not stay charged
First, start off with a fully charged battery. Take a voltage reading across battery terminals with engine running - If 11 - 12 volts at battery, alternator or wiring problem. If 13 - 14 volts at battery, alternator doing its job.
Again, with engine running, take voltage reading at large red ternminal at the back of the alternator. Report back findings & we'll go from there.

Re: battery will not stay charged
Another simple way to test the alternator is remove the positive lead from the battery while it's running. If it stalls the alt. is bad. If it stays running it's working.
It could be your starter causing the battery drain.

how could i tell if it is the starter? when the battery had a charge the car would run at high rpm's but if i let it idle then it would die

Re: battery will not stay charged
Im willing to bet its the wiring. Check and make sure all your wires are clean tight and insulated. Esepcially the starter cable, main ground and alternator wire. Dont make the mistake of throwing a lot of parts at it.
