under the center console right next to the e-brake there is a little black box with i believe it was 6 wires going in to it with a ground to the body. i have completely gutted the inside to cut weight and i was curious if this was a vital piece of equipment. i would have traced it out but it started to pour down rain. thanks, jeff

 

I believe it's the relay for the hatch release.

 

i guess i'll have to trace it out tomorrow to find out for sure seeing that wasn't a definite answer, thanks for the reply

 

If you have airbags, there will be another box (sensor) in there. The only way to tell for sure is to check the wire colors.

I don't know if your talking about the same thing I was curious about. I just stripped my interior as well on my 84, right now next the the e-brake i have 2 harnesses for the power windows, 1 harness for the hatch, and 1 black box/plug that a bunch of wires run into. I assumed that it was a harness but not plugged into anything and was meant for the optional analog clock that was available between the console and power window switches. (If we are talking about the same black box) But I'm just gonna leave mine in because too many wires run through it.
