Rear hatch pull down issue

I have an 86 Firebird with a pull down rear hatch and right now the motor is slipping not allowing the rear hatch to pull down. If I pull the motor itself out away from the the body, it grabs and works fine, but as soon as I let go it starts slipping again. I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue. Currently I have it in a lower position and I just slam it shut but I would like to get it working properly going to a pick -n- pull as a last resort really just cause I know it works once you line it up properly.

Re: Rear hatch pull down issue

By "slipping" do you mean the motor is running, yet not pulling the latch down? If so, the problem is likely a broken gear nut. It could also be a broken motor housing (the clear plastic part that the motor slips into). Both items are available on my web site. Download either the repair instructions for my 101170 nylon guides from the lower left side of my site under "Documentation" or the Tech Article I wrote that is posted on ThirdGen.org.
