Firebird Headlight Trouble
Firebird Headlight Trouble
I am new to posting so if anyone could help me with this problem, I'd really appreciate it. I have an 85 Pontiac Firebird and the problem I am having is with the headlights not going up and down. The drivers side headlight goes up and stays up and the passengers side stays down. Neither light will respond to the switch but the lights will come on. I have replaced both acuator relays and checked the motors with a 12v power supply and both motors work. I recently bought a used isolation relay and I am wondering if it is just a bad relay. If anyone has an idea of what could be the problem let me know.
Re: Firebird Headlight Trouble
92 firebird had the same problem. The motor turns so you think the motor is good. Pull a part places all the motors are taken, which is a good thing since most motors of this age are starting to break down. Your problem isn't electrical it is the bushings inside the motors. The good thing is that they are very easy to fix.
go on Email and look you will see someone selling these motor bushings. I paid around 9-11 $ total. Then you will remove the motors from the vehicle and take the gear assembly out of the motor and put in the new bushings. The first one took me about an hour because the gear was stuck. The second or the pass. side light only took me about 10 minutes. It is very easy to do and now mine work perfect.
When you do this. Take note that drivers side gear is hard to remove. I took a drill and made a small hole in the back side. Took a nail and hammered the gear set out. Be sure only to make a small hole so you can fix that. One additional thing. on both light motors. when you remove lights from the car. The bottom bolts which hold the motors in are a pain in the A__ as a result when I put the lights back in I didn't include these bolts. This way 8-9 years down the road when I have to replace these bushings again I will not have to mess with them. Use a ratcheting wrench when removing them for the first time.
This will solve your problem.
Good luck
