power locks

searched to no avail so i figured i'd drop a new thread. This may be entirely incorrect but it's the closest thing i can think of...

Parted an 86 Berlinetta (this may be berly specific or may not, idk). It had power locks, i wanted power locks in my firebird. Bozo before me cut anything and everything and it's probably no wonder the car didn't run. Anways, i finally pieced it all together, and now have a successful power locks system installed. My question leads to the door latch. There is a two wire setup attatched to the latch by 1 screw. Don't know what it is, and it didn't have any direct hookup that i saw going to the power locks system, but my thought leads me to think that this possibly has something to do with the door lock cylinder. On newer vehicles with power locks you move counter clockwise, entire car locks, clock wise and the entire car unlocks (or some do driver, then all doors). Could this be that??? If not correct me please as i'm curious.

Being berlinetta i know that it had it's own special lighting curcuits but i don't see how that has to do with lights as there was a second door switch towards the back for lights. And it didn't have a "this specific door is open" light so i don't think it was that.

If my assumption is somehow correct how can i go about installing that on my firebird, seems that all latches have the screw hole, but not the wiring, and as mentioned, the car was hacked so i would have to wire it in wherever it is needed, i can't plug and play if that was even an option. I've tried thinking of how to wire it in, or even test it for that matter, and i can't mentally figure it out. Thanks for any help!
Jon

Re: power locks

someone's gotta know....berlinetta or not...someone with an originally equipped car with power door locks...if you turned and/or held the key in one direction would it unlock/lock all doors or just the one you had the key in? Like i said it may have nothing to do with power locks but just trying to get a feel for it, and see if i can put it in my firebird/if it's worth putting it in.

Just trying to get an idea of what it is/was. Thanks!

Re: power locks

Someones gotta know...

It was OEM...not aftermarket...

If i remember correctly it was a tan/white stripe wire and black? Maybe tan with a black/white stripe wire. Something of the sort. I don't have them infront of me thats why i can't be positive on colors.

Re: power locks

thanks for the responce. I'm just curious what it is for. I have an 84 berly but it doesn't have power locks. I picked apart the 86 berly for the 84, then realized i didn't wanna put money into that car. But it's just weird. I just wish i had a decent source for wiring schematics for berlinetta's. They seem to be unknown by the group like they never even existed half the time. Thanks again!

Re: power locks

I've never heard or seen that in a stock thirdgen. Seems like it would be 90's thidgen/fourthgen feature. I had to get an aftermarket keyless entry kit to get mine to do that. The keyless entry module goes by the door lock relays to lock unlock. I hope you find your answer, thats a pretty neat feature to have....

Re: power locks

i intend to figure out how the curcuit works...just trying to see if anyone had any knowledge base on it. Seems pretty unknown. It may very well be berlinetta specific, but it may be mountable in the correct area that i can figure out something of the sort to unlock/lock all doors from outside the car. Would be neat but i guess it will have to be back burner till i can get all the other parts of the car taken care of. Thanks for the replys guys!

Re: power locks

There is a two wire setup attatched to the latch by 1 screw.
It's 85 & 86 Berlinetta Specific.

The 84 Berlinetta used secondary door switches at the back door jam for the "DOOR AJAR" indicator lamp - same type of switch was used on the hatch. In 1985 Chevy changed it to the set-up you had in your 86. The switch for the DOOR AJAR light in the 85-86 Berlinetta was re-designed to be "unseen" at the door and hatch-back jams.

Hold onto the wiring if you still have it ,..... I might buy it off you someday !

Re: power locks

oh ok, yea, i scrapped the 86 so quickly i didn't have time to really study it. I was looking at the 84 and noticed the unsightly extra door switches. I thoght if there was a sensor per latch mechanism that chevy would do a cool thing with the digital dash like honda's do with which door is open...driver, passenger, or hatch kinda thing. I still have it, and i know it worked cause the interior lights worked as they should in the 86 when i had a battery on it. I was just hoping that it was a cool little berlinetta thing that went with the power door locks to control the car from outside the car. O well, lol. Thanks John!
