What is this sensor?

I have a 1989 camaro with a TBI 305. There is a sensor in the block in between the spark plugs on the passenger side of the car. The sensor has been melted and the wires have been melted apart. What is this sensor so I know which part to get to replace it with?

Probably the temperature sensor for the dash guage, not to be confused with the one in the waterneck for the computer.

That I actually believe is your fan switch temp sensor. The temp guage sensor in on the driver side of the block.

yup he is right, the wires to that sensor usually melt due to the proximity of the exhaust manifolds. go to www.rockauto.com you can get it there.

Re: What is this sensor?

K my temp guage still works as well as my coolant fan, but I will def replace that asap...Is there more than one sensor that regulates temp? also I have a problem with voltage...when the ignition switch is on, but the car is not running my voltometer in the dash reads around 9-10v. I believe it should read 12 and this causes problems with my starter, it either works fine or isn't able to pull enough power from the battery to turn the starter motor, but when the car is running it reads around 13-14v. What could be causing the shortage of power?

Re: What is this sensor?

9- 10 volts is a touch low but really close to normal. You have to keep in mind that a 12 volt battery is not going to read dead nuts 12 volts when in your car. You have ECM back up memory to mantain, radio memory, cigarette lighter, brake light switch is always HOT, and a few other things have relays which use HOT wire AND switched signal source like electric fans, some headlight systems, properly installed fog lights, etc.
There is a KNOCK sensor on some vehicles on the passenger side, but I am used to seeing that mounted lower in the block not up on the head, but what the heck, yours is melted right. Thats not normal what ever it goes too.

Ooops, you're right. For some reason I thought the OP was talking about the driver's side.

Re: What is this sensor?

I figured out the voltage problem...bad connection on the neutral switch. I have an aftermarket tranny n the wiring was loose. Its definitely the coolant fan switch because i tested the fan and it doesnt turn on anymore. I mostly use the car at highway speeds so the fan hasnt been needed apparently because it never overheated til i just ran it and parked to idle for a little while to see what happens. Thanks for the help tho
