Power locks don't fully engage lock?

My wife just noticed while driving our 92 Z/28 for the first time in long while, that when you push the lock button on our Code Alarm remote, you can hear the lock actuators activate, but they don't fully engage the lock (i.e. you can still open the door). I thought it was an alarm problem, but the same thing happens if I push the power lock button inside the car... The lock slides over (enough to make the red not show), but not enough to engage the lock. I have to manually slide the bars over on both the DS and PS to lock the car.

Any ideas on how to fix???

Thanks
Jeff

Re: Power locks don't fully engage lock?

The door locks are drying out and need to be cleaned and lubricated. Common problem on all old cars, I had the same issue.
If the door lock is hard to operate (mechanically), the power lock cylinders don't have enough power to lock/unlock the car. You probably have to press the lock button several times before the door actually locks, right?

Re: Power locks don't fully engage lock?

I'd have to try again to be sure, but I think I tried 2 or 3 times and they still wouldn't fully engage, I had to do it by hand.

Is this something that is in a service manual? Pretty sure I have one for this car, just have to dig it out.

So you're theory is the lock actuators themselves, rather than an electronic problem? I'm not sure what I'd have to do once I got the door off...

WAIT!

before u buy nything pullt he door card off and watch the rods move.
Chances are they have to much play in they.

Tighten them up with a zip-tie (not too tight though or the key won't work in the door)
I'll bet that's ur prob, if not at last it cost u only time before u spend money.

I bought a new actuator when I later found out it wasn't that, and the zip tie fixed it

OK, I'll have to pull one off and see. The windows are incredibly slow too, even though we had the PS one replaced a few years ago...

First I have to fix the other gremlin which is causing mysterious stalling and failling to restart. I'm assuming its a ground issue, b/c when cold, the lights flicker until everything warms up...

You might consider some of the following, should you remove the door panel:

dust and grime cause 95% of all lock actuators, rods, window motor problems. when i was a interior tech monkey, most people want to replace good parts. just "restore your door" hehe.
