Electric Speedometer Problem
I recently installed an Air Ride Technologies system on my Camaro. Ever since I installed it...the speedometer has acted up. The speedometer will only work at a certain speed....then go up to 115 MPH...and stay. When the car is stopped...it will go back down to 0 and continue to do the same thing. What the hell should I look for? I did nothing that would effect how the speedometer works. Is there a sensor somewhere or something??

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
you have a vss sensor on your transmission. It can only be
1. vss
2.speedo
3.ecm
one of them is at fault.

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
it's located on the drivers side...towards the drive shaft right? There is a purple and yellow wire plugged into it? Well..I unbolted the bracket and started to wiggle it out...and tranny fluid started dumping everywhere. Is all the tranny fluid going to drain out??

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
Yes that is your VSS plug with a yellow and a purple wire going to it.
Is it still leaking out? I don't think it is all going to drain out but my only experience with a VSS is on my T56 and I never took it off.

just replaced the VSS. Jacked the car up in the rear and gave it some gas. Still nothing. Where is the ECM located? Is there anything I can test??

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
the ecm is above the passengers feet very close to the pass side door. remove the hush panel and you will see it, pretty hard to miss if your lying on the floor.
the easiest thing to do is if you have access to a scanner use that and read the computer while driving the car, thats how i found out how fast i was going seeing as how my speedo doesnt work. there is also a way to test the speedo itself and the ecm without a scanner.
" Drop the knee panel under the dash (driver side, of course) and locate the grey wire that comes out of the instrument cluster. Put a probe on it. Run the car (either on the road or jack stands) and you should see approximately 6VDC or 12VAC on a multimeter.
If not, drop the passenger knee panel and repead the same procedure with pin D on the C207 connector by the ECM.
Hope this helps.

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
So...is it normal that the odometer and trip gauge work fine...but the speedo doesn't? I have the car jacked up in the air....letting the rear wheels spin.....if that matters....

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
not at all, if the speedo isn't working then the odo shouldn't be working either they go hand in hand. Maybe the needle on the speedo has become dislodged. I don't know if you can take those clusters down as far as you can with the 82-89 clusters, but if the odo is working I would definately go there for diagnosis.

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
The car has been sitting since last October...I took the cluster out..and tipped it upside down...and the needle "flows" fine....not sure really what to do...

Re: Electric Speedometer Problem
If the odometer counts miles perfectly but the speedometer needle doesn't show the speed right, it's the speedometer driver/gauge that's bad and needs to be replaced.

The mileage and trip odomter work....is that normal if the actual speedmter doesn't work....but all of the other gauges do??? Do I just need to replace the intire cluster? I've already replaced the VSS...

Sorry for not replying sooner, you know how screwy this board is with email notifications.
If your odometer works, it's the gauge itself that's bad or the driver module that drives the needle. It's located in the instrument cluster. The best bet would be to buy a different cluster and do a swap.
