89 T/A, what excites the alternator to charge?
I put a carbed engine in my 89 T/A that had 305 TBI. The alternator has power to it but the tan/white wire(which I think tells it to charge)doesn't have any power. I am going to check the fuse but was wanting to know what to check after that. The gauge in the dash works but it's not charging.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The tan/white wire gets power from the FAN fuse. If it is blown or removed, the alternator won't charge.
Hope this helps.

tan/ white wire?????
is it different in the camaro, ive got a 92 and my alternator was not charging the battery. the red wire in the pigtail has power, but there is no ground from the black wire. is that the problem w/ mine. should there be both ground and power at all times even w/ the car off?????
thanks

The black wire you're referring to is probably a dirty brown wire.
It needs to have 12V on it (with the key on) for the alternator to charge.
Some cars have a brown wire, some use a tan/white to the alternator. No matter what the service manuals say.

Re: 89 T/A, what excites the alternator to charge?
got it, when i replaced the pigtail on my car(originally had two wires) the people at autozone gave a pigtail w/ three wires. Red, black and a brown, the lady at autozone told me just hook up the red and the black, the brown goes to the fan. so thats what i did
looking closely at the old wire, yeah it IS a brown wire!!!!!
that and i replaced the fuse everything is working now
thanks big lou
now if i could just figure out the cooling problem

If it's the cooling fan circuit that's giving you trouble, try this tech article: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=36
If it's the actual cooling system, there is a separate forum for it here. It's called "Cooling". You'll find a lot of info and advice there.
Hope this helps.
