right headlight motor not getting power

I have an 89 firebird. The connector for the right headlight motor was cut off and an older 82-86 motor was there so I bough one at the junkyard yesterday and replaced the bushings and hook it up to the left one to see if it worked and it did so I had to cut off the plastic connector on the motor and straight wire it green to green and gray to gray but the motor did not work. What could be causing the left one to work and the right one not to? I know the motor is good and working cause I check it on the left side so the right side is not getting power somehow. Is there a seprate relay for the right one or may be a fusible link but I don't know where it is?

Re: right headlight motor not getting power

There is a control box located by the brake booster. It has two plugs going into it. Check to see if the wiring is unhooked, and check the wiring from that to the motor. My buddy had a similar problem with his 88 GTA, and it turned out he had a minor wiring glitch, as well as a bad module.

Yep, check the headlight control module. There's a relay in it, with separate contacts for each headlight motor. Most likely one of the contacts is burned or dirty. It's the big flat box behind the brake booster, with 2 plugs on it. Turn the headlights on, and try tapping it with a screwdriver. Mine is also flaky, I was able to get it working a little better by taking it apart, and cleaning the relay contacts. The only place I know to get one is from top down solutions, the junkyard, or the dealer.

Re: right headlight motor not getting power

It is most likely the headlight control module. Remove the two connectors from it, then slide the module from the bracket and tap it on the ground a couple of times. That may clear up a sticking contact. If not I picked up some of the 87-89 modules recently so I do have them in stock. If you go to a Pick-a-Part for one you'll need one from a 87-89 Firebird or 87 Fiero.

Re: right headlight motor not getting power

Thanks for the help!! I'll check out that box on the firewall. Right now I got it wired to the the right headlight motor and both lights work fine but I'd like to fix it the right way cause I don't know if wiring up both motors to the right side will cause any damage.
