gauge cluster short

so lately the camaro has been a PITA working on it. so after fixing all the engine problems one day i take off the cluster cover and that metal thing that goes around the gauge cluster because i saw a thread on how painting it will make the gauges more visible, so after i take this off i try to take of the gauge cluster, i couldnt get it off and i didnt have my haynes manual nearby so i let it be and went inside to paint the metal cover, next time i try to start the car the gauges are berserk, rpms idle at 4k and when my foot is on the pedal it redlines, the mph has a pulse, volts dont work, fuel gauge is frozen. just utter crap, and to make it worse, when i hit the turning signals the guages all have a pulse and go up and down. also i noticed that the small bulb for the right turn signal is burnt out. now what im wondering is will getting a whole new gauge cluster fix the problem, or do you think that if i replace the burnt out bulb itll fix the problem, also why would all this happen after i take off the cover?

Mentioning the year (make and model) would be helpful. I'm unsure of why you tried to remove the cluster to paint the bezel, but that may have caused the problem. I'd try reseating the cluster since you may have pulled it partially away from its connections.

Re: gauge cluster short

I second that. James is right, it sounds like bad connections at the back of the cluster. Try re-seating it.

an 86 camaro, also how are the connections in the back? should the cluster just pull up forward with the bezel off?

Two connections that pop in and out. You can't remove the cluster until you've disconnected the speedo cable. Check the following link for more info (the first pic shows one of the two connections):

Re: gauge cluster short

I bent the prongs on mine not even knowing it. One of my friends noticed it. I burnt up the chip for my speedo.
