Turn signal switch

I explained my problem on someones else's thread but I figure I need to start my own. Okay, my right turn signal does not work most of the time. I can hear the clicking, but no lights. If I turn on the hazard lights it blows the fuse. My parking lights and brake lights work fine. Also, if I turn on the right blinker with the ignition to run (engine off) I can see the tach pulsing and hear the fuel pump turn on. Apparently if the ECM senses the tach moving it turns on the fuel pump. The previous owner said he could wiggle the wires in the steering column and the turn signal would work until he hit a bump. My best guess is maybe the turn signal switch inside the column. Do any of you agree? If so, what tools do I need to replace it?

Re: Turn signal switch

As far as the fuel pump running when you have the signal on, doesn't sound right. When you have the switch out, you may want to look for wires shorted together. Especially near the Ignition switch wiring. It may not be the turn signal switch itslef, maybe a melted wire that's causing a short to hot.

The turn signal switch isn't bad to install. You will need a couple of philips screwdrivers, a steering wheel puller, a lock plate removal tool, and a socket to get the steering wheel nut off, and IIRC a 9/32 socket to pull the lower dash panel.

Re: Turn signal switch

I have my wheel off now and I have the switch loose. I also have it unplugged at the bottom. My problem now is that the wires are in a plastic sheath and there is no way I can feed the wires through it. Do I need to remove this metal bracket under the column? Will the column drop if I do?

Re: Turn signal switch

Yes you need to remove the mount to get the harness out of the plastic conduit. The column will want to come down, just wedge a box between it and the seat. If you need a new switch I got a brand new one in the box for an 89 Camaro. I think they are all the same. If you decide you need one let me know, just pay the shipping.

All the problems you describe sounds exactly like a loose ground wire. This will create a whole lot of wierd symptons. Check for any that are not tight or not connected under the dash. I think there are 2 black ground wires connected to the column mount and a couple more to the metal dash support.

Re: Turn signal switch

I'll have to find something to hold it up then. I loosened the bracket, but I wasn't sure if it would come crashing down on my head . I don't see any damaged wires under the dash, so hopefully the problem will be in the column. I did see a connector that didn't have anything connected to it right above the driver kickplate. It had two wires going to it, a yellow one and a purple one. I didn't see anything that would connect to them though.

I'll PM you about the switch.

Re: Turn signal switch

I have the switch completely out now, but I don't really see anything wrong with the wires. Is it possible there could be a short in the plastic cam section of it ? I guess I should go ahead and replace with a new one regardless, since I went through the trouble of taking it out .

Re: Turn signal switch

Just an update on this. I replaced the turn signal switch today and everything seems to be working normal now , hope it stays that way. I went to the Pontiac dealer and they told me they could order the part for $63 , then I went down the street to AutoZone and bought the same part for $22.99
