Starter replaced + electrical error
Starter replaced + electrical error
Well people my firebird must know im going to take it off the road in a week or two because the starter went in it. So after working on it on the road for a while i replaced it, but it still wont turn over from the ignition. However you can jump it across the starter and it will start (screwdriver from igniton to power) so its obviously an electrical problem. We did some testing and proved that the problem is between the ignition key/steering column to just after the firewall. Because it will jump from the ignition wire to the battery from the other side of the fire wall. Its proven that its an ignition wire problem (little wire on starter) We've also proven that the pink/purple wire is the ignition wire. Im wondering if anyone knows anything about this, some kind of fuse, neutral safety switch, anything im stumped here and i hate starting my car with a screwdriver...

Knowing the year, motor, and transmission would sure help folks who might look for a wiring diagram to help you.
If an automatic transmission, have you checked the gear selector switch, or if a manual, have you checked the clutch start switch?

Sry forgot this forum doesnt have that info posted. 89 firebird 2.8L, auto. I have the console all torn out the other day and didnt find anything out of the ordinary...gear selector switch i'll assume is the big connection with 6-8 wires running into it, had the voltmeter going on that and didnt find anything wrong.

Yep, that's the gear selector switch.
Well, I looked at the proper wiring diagram and if you have 12v on the purple wire at the gear selector switch while the key is turned to start, it's pretty much down to the wire or the connection being bad. I had the latter problem on one of my cars last year. The wire had corroded at the terminal but the insulation was holding it in place so all looked okay. If you don't have the 12v on the purple wire at the gear selector switch, check the dark green/white wire there. If not there, check it at the starter enable relay (Passkey). A yellow wire feeds from the ignition switch to the starter enable relay. The ignition switch has a fuseable link that feeds it but if that was blown I'm sure you'd have other things that aren't working.
