digital dash lights.

Ok im having a problem. Tonight i was at a friends. And we went to leave it was dark so i got in turned the key and the top of the digital dash temp/oilpress/volts gauge was very dim. Then bout 5 miles down the road the whole part of the gauge went out. So i got home turned the car off and then turned the car again and it was still dim on top like before. Can the bulbs or whatever be going out? The car is an 87
