alt. wireing

I have an 85 iroc the wireing has been hacked up beyond beliefe but I am getting it worked out it is driveable now but my problem is the altenater does not charge till I rev the motor a little its like it turns it on then its fine till I shut it off any ideas would be great thanks

sounds like a 1 wire alternator to me. the stock 3 wire ones are "self exciting" meaning they start charging as soon as the motor kicks over- that's what the extra 2 wires are for. the one wire alternators are NOT "self exciting" and need to be spun at a certain RPM before they start charging. if it starts charging after you rev it a little, it's most likely a 1 wire. or you can see how many wires are hooked up to it and that'll give you an answer.

You need to run a jumper wire form the A terminal to the battery post. See link bellow.

thanks guys I ran the jumper and that solved it it is a three wire but I just ran it like a one wire becuse there was no wireing left
