CFI to TPI
I have a 83 Z-28 with CFI and am thinking about morphing the fuel system to an OEM TPI unit. It's just at the though process at the moment but is the PCM and harness a hassle free swap or are there issues that I should know to address before hand. Thank you for any information. Mikey
Re: CFI to TPI
I'm doing an 88 305 TBI swap in my 85 Trans Am that originally had a 305 TPI engine. This is because the previous owner pulled the TPI stuff off the car and cut out 85% of the harness before I got it and I wanted the easiest route to getting FI back in the car.
From what I found it's a pretty straight forward swap providing you use the engine AND dash harness that came from the donor car. This is mostly because some pin-outs changed places on the bulkhead and underdash plug through the years.
If it were me I would try to find a cable driven speedo TPI system from the latest year camaro before it went to a digital speedometer and go from there. You can install a transmission mounted speed sensor instead of using a speedo mounted sensor.
There are a few ways you can do this and I'm sure others will chime in....but going from F-body to F-body that's the way I would do it.
I installed Speed density TPI on my 82 corvette that originally had a cross-fire engine....but I added a aftermarket stand alone TPI harness into my car.
Good luck
