Have Service Manual, how to figure out names of various connectors
Hey all,
I have a 1988 Firebird service manual. My question is how to figure out what the plugs and connectors are for in the diagram.
For example, it'll show the picture and location....of the plug.....but instead of telling what it is or a name it'll have a code that starts with a letter and three numbers...like C205 for example.
The same applies for the section that shows various connectors....it's just a letter + three numbers....how can I figure out what is what?
Please reply asap if possible, I need help as I am working on a harness retrofit right now
Thanks

Re: Have Service Manual, how to figure out names of various connectors
If you read the first pages of the electrical section in your manual it explains everything you need to know. This is how those codes break down.
For example: in C205 the "C" means connector. The "2" describes an area of the vehicle, usually counting from the front of the vehicle to the back. 1 may be the front header panel, 2 would be the firewall area, 3 would be the front passenger compartment. The "05" was assigned to this connector and simply means connector number 5.
You may also find in your schematics G205 or S205. In these cases the "G" means a ground and "S" means splice.
So to make all this work, Section 8A of your service manual shows all the wiring schematics and section 8A-201 shows all of their locations. In section 8A-202 you will find the diagrams of each connector.
First you locate the schematic for the component you are diagnosing, this is where you find your C205. Then flip to section 8A-201 and find the firewall dash area of the car and locate C205 in the pictures to find its location on the vehicle.
But all this will only work if you have the factory manuals with section 8.
Other manuals don't have this much detail.
If you are trying to assemble a vehicle using these codes it may be very tricky, they were designed to be friendly for diagnoses only.
Hope this helps and good luck.
