vats question

been having security issues with my 91 camaro 305 rs
iv looked into the vats system and aparently this relay called the start enable relay is what the vats modual turns on by grounding it and allowing the power from the ignition switch get to the solenoid on the starter .so if i just run a wire from my ignition switch directly to the s side of the starter will the car start all the time? will the piece o crap vats finally be gone ?
first where is the start enable relay located cant find any info on that . and will any other things be effected like spark ect.
thanks for any help

Re: vats question

found out more . yes it does turn off the spark and feul pump relay so just getting it to crank doesnt solve the problem. the resistor fix is about all that works without alot of work

Re: vats question

well just do the resistors onto the vats wire, so simple, ive done like 5 or 6 on 3rd and 4th gens in the last week or two and its the fastest way to disable it, running a wire stright to your starter would be cool except vats also controls fuel so even if you got the starter to crank the injectors wouldnt be firing.

MEasure the key, solder a series of reisitors to get within the tolerance range of your decoder module, normally its a 2-2.5K ohm range, rule of thumb is just get it close to the key, go under the dash and find the orange wire coming off of the steering column, snipe it and pull the connector, then pull the orange isulation back to find 2 18+ gauge wires (tiny things), solder the resistor you made between those two and plug it back in.

violla! no more vats for 15 mins and like 5 bucks

Re: vats question

I ran a wire from the ignition to the starter terminal and it cranks every time. I always had problems with the starter enable relay or something to do with it. I bypassed my key a while back thinking that was the problem and still had a no crank issue sometimes, so thats when I ran the wire from the ignition switch to the starter. Cranks and fires everytime now. The vats module is still reading the resistor I wired in to turn on the injectors and what ever else it does but I dont have to worry about the starter enable relay portion of the vats system. Remember, when you do the resistor thing, your not bypassing the the vats system, your just bypassing the key. The vats system is still working.

Re: vats question

depends on what the resistance of your vats is looking for , you need to know that first , some dealer parts guys can find out by the vin some cant , if you have your key you can read it with an ohm meter but , makes sure you hold it on there till the meter drops as low as it will go because it has too build electrons in the resistor to get a good reading , since there is only .5 ohm variance if you read it wrong it wont work . find the resistance and get some at radio shack for like 3 bucs and solder them up then jump them into the vats key connector under the sterring coloum. i did it and it was simple cost like 3 bucs and i dont ever have the no crank problem .
