sense wire question
sense wire question
hey guys ive been having the natoris charge problem witheall the accecories on and was wondering will the ACD CS130 still charge around 13.8 volts if the sense wire is removed and the there is no load on the ALT no fans or AC Blower or would it drop lower, the reason im asking i believe that maby my sense wire is causing a problem by not letting my alt know hey there is a big load on me up the power.
Re: sense wire question
Take the alternator off and have it checked under a load. Autozone should be able to do that. It sounds like you may have a regulator problem or a doide problem. Both problems are internal to the alt.
Re: sense wire question
thanks man i noticed something else when i disconnect the sense wire it doesn't change the voltage at all i can even ground out the wire and still nothing is this right? I would think disconnecting the sense wire would make the voltage go up
Re: sense wire question
hey man thanks but on my GTA there is 3 wires that go into a pigtail and then the wire that hooks to the alt two one brown one brown and white and one red the red is the sense wire which with it unlpuged i still read 14 V but with the brown wire unplugged the alt wont work my problem is with all of the accories running fans, ac, ect my alt is only putting out a max 12.8-13V once you turn everything off it rises back to around 13.6 ive been thorugh 4 Alt. in the past 6 monthes thinking somethin was wrong with them but they all do the same thing. I did notice that when the fans are on its not that bad it all seems to be tied into the AC blower it runs but could it possiablity be somewhat shorted and pulling more power that normal thanks

Re: sense wire question
The secondary red is the sense wire as you say, and is not to be confused with the exiter wire. The sense terminal is internally connected to the Bat output terminal via a resistor, and so it usually has no effect to disconnect it, but do not ground it - or something bad will surely happen. The only use for it is if it's hooked to the battery itself, and the main charge wire is too long and thin. Then it'll up the voltage at the alternator Bat output terminal to compensate for the drop across the main wire.
You say nothing about the rpm's at which you measured the voltage, and where & with what you measured it. Any underdrive pulleys btw.? If measured at idle it sounds normal, and if measured inside the car it's also normal.
Measure it with a DVM at the battery itself and at 1500 rpm at least, when under load.
