91 bird with serious electrical problems

Hi everyone this is my first post here ive been a lurker for a few weeks, I recently bought a 91 firebird with a 3.1 liter v6. after i got it home and off the trailer i noticed something hanging down under the floor pan (or rather lack thereof) upon further inspection it is a black casing with about10 small wires coming from the rear of the car. here is the problem. when i go to start the car and shut it off, it keeps trying to start and the warning lights stay on and the headlights bug out fliping up and down could it have something to do with the wires i found hanging? any help appreciated, this is my first computer controlled car.

Re: 91 bird with serious electrical problems

That doesn't look like factory wiring to me.
Maybe an alarm or cd changer wiring.

Another question do you have the orginal keys with the VAT chip?

Re: 91 bird with serious electrical problems

Must be a mechanical fault with the key to ignition switch transfer linkage, or just a loose ignition switch. Don't know if that headlight issue is related.

I have both original vats keys. When i beat the hell out of the steering column it does quit trying to start and the lights quit flipping up so maybe it is the ignition how would i fix that if it is?

Re: 91 bird with serious electrical problems

Do you have tilt? If it's loose (sideways) it will affect both lights and ignition. It's a pain in the *** to fix that problem..
Anyway the ignition and light (hi/lo) switches are mounted together on the column about a foot down from the key. Take off the panels below the column so you can get to them. They are fastened with 2 or 3screws I think, and when loose the switches can be adjusted a bit up & down the column to fit the key & lever positions. Hth.

Re: 91 bird with serious electrical problems

Sorry, when I was referring to the screws I was thinking about the switches, not the panels. As I don't have a bird I can't really tell you in detail how to take off the panels/covers, you'll have to figure that out by yourself..
