brake lights are very..."special"
ok, so i just found out the other day when i got someone else to drive my 86 sc that as they were driving the third brake light (yes that annoying eyesore that set the 86 apart) was on which suprised me because i thought it didnt work at all. but when they depressed the brakes, the third light turned off and the 2 stop light turned on. so it like switches when they stop lol. is there a way to keep all the lights working how they should?

Re: brake lights are very..."special"
Yeah my friend has a 1992 RS and his 3rd brake light doesnt work at all, its wierd cause the fuses are all fine and the bulb is brand new and there isnt any severed wires that i could see... i wonder if the rear defrost switch has anything to do with this

idk about 92 though cause that is a spoiler mounted light. mine makes more since to mix up because it was backhatch glass mounted and the electricity travels on the same wire to get to where its going.

Re: brake lights are very..."special"
you could try switching the wires
but...
that would mean that the defroster would turn off when you hit the brakes.
it might work tho.
if that doesnt work, check the brake switch.
there is a switch that is attached to the brake pedal that turns on the brake lights.
wire the 3rd brake light to the same circuit as the other brake lights.
then get rid of any "ghetto wiring" that was done previously.
then re-wire the defroster circuit to the switch.

Check if the defrost grid and the 3rd brake light has a common ground, and if it's grounded for real. Loose common grounds gives all kinds of weird symptoms.

Re: brake lights are very..."special"
Hey guys,
I know this is old but did anyone find the fix for this? I just came across this thread as I am having the same issue. I have an '86 IROC and I can turn on/off the third brake light with the rear defrost. I start the car and everything is fine. When I hit the brakes, the rear defrost switch light comes on but upper brake light doesn't. When I release the brake, the upper brake light comes on. I can turn it off by turning off defrost. Next time I hit brakes, rear defrost comes on and then upper brake light works opposite of brake lights until I turn off rear defrost again. I hope someone found the fix. I took rear defrost switch out of dash panel and with lighter just above it, that came out and I found that all taped around cylinder so it can't make contact. Now I am wondering what previous owner may have done to wiring and if lighter was heating up on its own so they taped it to keep it from making contact and burning up. I thought car was still all original. Maybe not.... Hahaha....
