Speedo Where?
I'm looking and all I really need is a higher top speed speedometer. I notice some people are able to buy these but I haven't found any appropraite websites that suit me for what i'm looking for.
I have a 1989 Camaro rs, and looking for a speedometer (just the speedo guage) for my car. I'm thinking of replacing it. Im just curious if anyone could help assist me in where I may buy one and maybe some pros/cons on the parts. I heard my guage is mechanically read; so i dont know if that interfers with anything?
regards,
Timinsk

Re: Speedo Where?
i bought a rebuilt and calibrated 145 mph speedo on ebay for $75 plus $14 s/h from a speedo shop. it has the z28 logo on it. my only problem is that the trip reset button is in the 6oclock position and my old one was at 10.
502-966-5086 is the number.axmn49 is he ebay id if you want to check him out there. he ships super fast. i had mine in less than 4 days.

Re: Speedo Where?
I was thinking of just replacing the speedometer gauge so i could have one that shows 160 or so but i guess it'll be cheaper to get a 145 from online[/quote]
how often do you think you will go over 110 ? i know i won't do it much . IMHO the high reading speedo is just eye candy , but thats just my thoughts . JamesC has posted an excellent repair procedure on the speedo , just do a search . good luck .

Re: Speedo Where?
There are several types of clusters used from 82-89. Without getting into the differences in the gage faces,.. the only one that will work "correctly" in your car will be from an 89. Here's why:
82-84 Clusters will work but will cause a backlighting problem behind the speedo and the E-Brake warning light will not work. There is no "security" light for the Vats in a 89 car.
85-88 Gauge clusters will work - but they do not have a Security Warning Light either.
89 is an exact match.
90-92 will not fit.
If you buy a replacement cluster be sure it will work with your engine. Look at the Oil Pressure gauge in the Tachometer,....... a 30/60 Oil Pressure gauge is used on the V8 clusters and a 40/80 Oil Pressure gauge is used on the V6's.

Re: Speedo Where?
The above is exactly why you should only replace the speedo head (if the remainder of the cluster functions as designed).

Re: Speedo Where?
My whole cluster doesnt even work; and i dont know why. I think that my gas gauge might be working.. its hard to tell.. so im thinking either i buy a 89 cluster that has 145 on gauge or i buy the one i have that has 80 which would be cheaper i guess and then buy a speedometer that has 145..

Re: Speedo Where?
Hum, I'd suggest that you make sure the cluster is seated correctly, that the cable is attached, and that the fuse is good before throwing money at another cluster. I'd guess that having an entire cluster fail is fairly rare.

Re: Speedo Where?
Check your owner's manual--or if it's missing, simply pull fuses one at a time and check them.
