80's radar detector
This isn't third gen specific, but...
my '85 z28 has a radar detector installed in it from sometime in the '80's, and there is a three position switch for it under the dash, with a speaker and a red light. The light is off when the switch is in the first position, it beeps and the light comes on when i put the switch in the second position, and the light stays on, but it doesn't beep again, when I put the switch in the third position. The actual 'detector' is under the front bumper, and I know the system works. I'm not familiar with radar detectors at all, and my question is, what do you think the different positions in the switch do? There seems to be no difference in the way the system works when the switch is in the second or third positions.

Re: 80's radar detector
Just guessing here, but I would say the 1st switch position is OFF, the 2nd is ON and the 3rd is on but mutes the audible portion of the alarm.
Do you know who the manufacturer of detector it is?

Re: 80's radar detector
Radar detectors usually had two sensitivity levels, one for "city" driving(that dealt with the many nearby interferences in the airwaves due to city conditions, like traffic, alarm systems, etc.), and one for "highway" driving(where the conditions were more spacious and less-congested).
So if it alerts you by beeping AND flashing with the switch in either position, then I'd guess the switch is for "city" and "highway" conditions. But if there's a visual alert only with the switch in one of the positions(flashing, but no beeping), then it's probably a "mute" setting, like paulo suggested.

Re: 80's radar detector
DJP87Z28, I've tested it and know it works reliably, against the local city cops radar systems. I would never trust it on the highways, where the state troopers patrol.
Paulo, the manufacturer appears to be 'Whistler'.
LAFireboyd, that's what it must be, different sensitivity levels, because it beeps when in both positions.
Thanks Paulo, I wouldn't have thought to see who the manufacturer was,
I just sent Whistler an email, asking for info about it.

Re: 80's radar detector
I have a similar system from the 80's. The only thing it detects are cell phone towers
