That "thing" is the bulkhead connector. Im not sure you can delete that while trying to cut down on your wiring...but either way.
Its very easy to remove. There is a bolt in the middle. Take a wrench, find the right size socket, and start unscrewing. The plug will start walking off with the bolt. I forget what size it is...but you should be able to figure that out. 7 or 8mm maybe?
It has some old style dielectric goo in it, so sometimes it gets alittle stuck together. Dont be tempted to clean that goo out if you are putting the plug back in either...its supposed to be in there.

No prob man...no need to feel like a tard for asking questions. Its how we all learned.
And I wasnt scolding you for not knowing the name
its an important plug, so I just figured next time you reference it you'll be on the same page with everyone.
Good luck with your project!

Just a suggestion if you havent done so already, Put the 2 nuts that are around the ouside of the box in the picture back on the bolts. They are a real pain sometimes once you have the connector apart to put back. ghettocruiser covered everything else it looks like. Have fun seperating all that wiring!
