Headlight+ Alternator problem
Headlight+ Alternator problem
I have an 86 camaro v8 H.O. I converted my headlights to the H4 Setup with a wiring harness from summit, and they still dont work right. My dims don't work at all, and when i turn on my brights all 4 lights come on. Plus when i turn on my lights my left turn signal dosent work and on the dash both turn signal lights are lit. Also, when i turn on my lights my battery gets totally drained and my alternator starts to squeak, i had the alternator tested and they said it was good. The alternator dosent drain when playin my subs or anything, and i unhooked them and it still does it.
Please HELP!!!

Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
Well i dont think theres a problem with your alternator actually i think whats happaning is you have a short and its loading the alernator down causing the belt to slip ect. Now for the headlights do you have any schematics for what youve got going on there?
Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
Well i dont have a picture but i can tell u what i have. It has 2 blue power wires that go straight to the + side of the battery. 4 plugs that plug directly to the headlights. One plug that plugs into the old headlight plug. Two grounds. 2 relays, a link for the power wires.

Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
Ok well i hope your good with a volt meter cuz this is going to be a long one lol. First off let me guess what youve got the 2 power lines one to each relay grounds to each relay one wire of the connector thats pugged into the old wireing harness going to each relay and then a big harness going to the lights? First off you want to dissconnect the healight connector from the summit harness. Now youll want to do is take the volt meter and put the black lead to ground and the red one to each of the pins on the cars original headlight connector. Now you should measure with low beams on only 12V only on the tan wire and with the high beams on 12 v only the light green wire. The 3rd should be a ground only and should have 0 ohms to ground. That being said i think you have a problem with the ground on your low beam headlight relay. Measure the resistance to ground should be 0 ohms.
Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
ok ill check that when i get the chance.... im gunna be off work this weekend so ill get back to ya... i still dont know whats wrong with the alternator though. It starts to squeal really bad when it starts to charge the car.
Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
i have got the alternator to stop squeaking but i still havent figured out why the lights are very dim and my turn signals act very slow especially the left. Also, the turn signal lights stay on when i turn on my Headlights

Re: Headlight+ Alternator problem
Awesome sounds like a bad ground for the turn signal and a bad switch or bad switches for the lighting system. Now did you do your H4 conversion before the wiring upgrade? if so you could have overloaded your lighting circuit and damaged a switch or two.
I had a problem on my other car that my turn signal would work in reverse, only brights would work and none of the dash lights worked right. Almost like everything was working backwards but it turned out that I had a small water leak on the hood cable and water was perfectly aimed for my fuse box/relay location and it was shorting everything out.
