speedometer problems

I have a 92 rs with the 3.1 v6. Everything works on the car, one day i started it and let it idle so I can caould check the tranny fluid. It was running for about 20 min. so it was warmed up, i noticed a check engine light on but the motor was still running smooth. When i shut it off and turned it back on there was no check engine light. I took it for a drive and the speedometer was not working at all. I dont know if the VSS just quit on me or what?

If you have cruise control you can use that to verify the VSS.

The econo way:

You can hookup leads to the VSS and monitor it with an audio amplifier.

Or

You can invest in a scanner and verify operation a TON easier.

Re: speedometer problems

i have access to a real nice snap-on scan tool.
even though the check engine light went off would the code still be stored in the ecm?

Just scan for codes, if the VSS failed it will read CODE 24.

If the VSS is good along with the associated electronics the scanner will show MPH.

Then you will know it’s the speedometer or its connection that has the problem.
