Reverse lights help

Hey guys. I just rebuilt my transmission and the guys at the shop couldn't figure out how to fix the reverse lights. When I put the gear in reverse the light comes on but it doesn't stay on when I'm backing up. Also, the red lights don't come on. I know its not the fuses so I'm wondering if its a neutral switch that needs to be replaced. My tranny is an automatic. Any suggestions?

Re: Reverse lights help

The reverse lights are turned on by the switch on the shifter. It is under the shifter plate in the center console, easily accessible. The switch might be misadjusted or just loose or something. Take a look at it, it might be obvious.
The reverse light wires on the switch are the blue one and the green one (the two wires in the middle).

Hope this helps.

Re: Reverse lights help

How do I take off the shifter handle? Do I just take out the ring on the shifter and twist it. I'm sure if I take off the center console completely off I will have a better view of the wires. I just don't want to mess up any wiring in the process of removing the console. Also, my ash tray lid was partially broken and after the rebuilt it is completely broken. I guess I have to remove the whole console to replace the ash lid cover.

Also, my power mirror window wiring must be messed up to since I can only adjust them by pushing the left button. Thanks, I will try it tomorrow.

Re: Reverse lights help

The crap-o-matic shifter handle has a U-shaped pin in it, I believe from the front. You can pull it out with a flathead screwdriver. Then the shifter handle comes off upward.
Word of advice, put it in 1st gear before pulling on the shifter handle. If you don't, your hand with the handle in it will come flying up, breaking off the rear-view mirror and leaving bruises. Wanna know how I know?

Re: Reverse lights help

After doing some research here I figured out how to remove the handle. What I can't figure out is how to take the damn neutral safety switch out. I unplugged the wires and the screws on top. I don't have enough room to take out the switch. It seems like I have to remove the whole console. Do I have to remove the whole console or is there an easier way?
