gauge ?'s for 91 rs
I've been trying to wire up an electric temp guage. the dark green wire for the cluster has no power so i tried connecting it straight to the sensor, but the car if i can get it to start runs rough at 1st then it smooths out and then se light comes on. and when it gets up to temp(220 ?) for the fan to kick on then the car shuts down. but if i unhook the extra gauge the car runs fine(also i wired the rest of the guage thru the radio so it has light, auxpower, straight power, and ground, then i have the sensor wire running to the sensor off the block with a inline fuse. not the greatest whiz but the radio seemed to have all the requirments i needed for my gauge other than hooking up the sensor.)
plz help.
i'm wanting to change all my gauges i've got an extra cluster to butcher. so i can make a housing for the new gauges but i'm not really sure which wires are for each sensor.

Which sensor did you hook up to? The sender for the gauge is in the drivers side head. As for the wiring go here :http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19
That should get you started. And your gauge should only need switched power, ground, illumination, and the input from the sensor. No constant power or the gauge will draw while your car is off.

one more thing would it be better to hook the gauges into the wiring harness from the ecm since i seem to have problems in my harness somewhere under the dash.

Do NOT combine the ECM sensors and dash gauges!
These are supposed to be separate wires and if you start screwing with them, bad things happen (engine shuts down at 200F etc).
As groundrat pointed out, you need to use the sensor in the driver side head for the dash gauge. It's a single-wire hookup - dark green. Gives you resistance from the sensor, based on the engine temperature.
Hope this helps.
