Power locks - wiring experts chime in!

Is there an absolute need for a relay in our wiring? I'm wiring in a keyless entry module from a 93-95 intomy 88 and it seems like if I take the relay out, it would resolvey headache of figuring out the whole thing. Someone give me a valid reason (with explanation) of why it's needed. Thanks

The relay is needed to amplify the current. Most alarms can handle 0.5A or maybe 1A for un/locking the doors whereas our door lock motors draw anywhere from 10A up.
That's why you need to use relays, to use the 0.5A to operate the relay which then sends the desired 10A to the door lock motors.
Otherwise you would burn up the alarm on the first dis/arm operation.

Hope this helps.

This is using the factory 93-95 keyless entry module, i assumed, looking at both wiring schematics that it did that very thing with amplification of amperage within the module. Let me find the two schematics, not that it'll prove amperage, but just for quick referance to what i'm speaking about.

Sorry, my answer was a little generic to all alarm systems but it applies to the factory remote entry module as well. Such digital modules (whether GM or aftermarket) rarely put relays on the digital board. Instead, they relay on external parts.
If you have the schematic, that'd help a little.

Re: Power locks - wiring experts chime in!

the 93-94 uses reverse polarity locks and the 88 uses positive pulse.

http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...etail/485.html 93-93
http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...etail/483.html 88-90

so you are going to have to use relays, unless the factoy keyless modual puts out a pulse and the relays are used for the reverse polarity syste.
