aftermarket fog light wiring problem

So I bought one those foglight kits from pepboys for about $20. There's no relay and I followed the wiring directions which tell you to send one lead to the fuse box, then ground the switch to the chassis which I did under the dash. The other lead goes to the lights and I grounded both of them to the chassis behind the bumper cover and they worked so I thought it was done. After taking a ride yesterday, I noticed they weren't working. I looked at the inline fuse to the battery terminal on the fuse block and noticed the inline melted in half. I have one half containing the fuse and the other with the spring loaded whatever. So what the hell caused this? I don't know if it's a crappy inline fuse or a bad ground. I checked the grounds where the lights mount and they're a little loose but I don't think that would do it. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

It could be a bad ground....some fog lights pull a lot of power so maybe that's why it popped the fuse....I would go get a headlight relay from parts store and wire that in also with a fuse just to be safe....That's what I had to do to keep mine working.

A safer way to wo this is to put them on their own feed. Wire a lead from the battery to the relay under the hood (put a fuse in the line). Ground the relay and the lights inside the engine bay. Then run your power to the inside of your car to a toggle switch.

That way the lights are on their own power source, and your not going to harm anything on the main harness.I had a couple of cars I wired this way and it worked very good.

Re: aftermarket fog light wiring problem

Thanks....that's what I was thinking before I started but chose to follow the directions instead. Is there a certain relay?

I ran a lead from the battery to a 20 amp inline fuse then to a PILOT 30 amp relay....the problem is that there were no instructions with the relay as it is a replacement for the kits that come with a relay (i guess). So I can't figure out how to ground the thing. There are four prongs on the relay and when I connect the lead and the switch to the relay, I hear a click, but no lights. They do work without the relay. Any suggestions? Thanks.
