91 camaro steering wheel swap with VATS key

I've searched the forum and asked around about my problem,, My current VATS key has no reading what so ever when I tried to take a reading. chip in key appears to bad. Also I am planning on doing a complete steering column swap from another 91 camaro as my column is in bad shape.

the new column has VATS key with it.
My question is this since i can not get a reading of my old key would I have to worry about it or does it matter since the new column has a key with it?

Thanks in advance

James G

the only way i know of is to replace the key AND the vats computer behind the dash on the pass side it;s stuffed up in there you'd have to take the whole thing apart but you would need the right key and vats comp to do it

the key and the VATS "HAVE TO MATCH" changing the stearing colum will defete this, in otherwords your scre^^D if you cant get a reading off of your old key, best look into a new Prom. it will save you hours and hours of trouble later as the car ages.

could one randomly try an assortment of resistors until they found the correct one to bypass VATS?

I would just grab the "made in Korea" security box when you get the new column. It sits under the dash, and you'd have to pull a bunch of stuff out to get to it, but it's doable.

Actually I've got one here. It's even from a 91. I can send it to you with the right resistor. All you'd have to do is splice it into the right wires, and you could get away with just mounting it somewhere convenient.

It's yours for five bucks shipped. PM me if you're interested.
