New steering column. Car wont start.

Hello thirdgen,

My tilt steering broke, so I switched in a new steering column, PITA, I got all the wiring reconnected, and the car wont start.

I imagine it's the anti-theft system. Here's the specs.

The car is a 5LV8, TBI 89 Camaro RS.

The new steering column is out of a V6 91 Camaro RS.

There's also an orange wire sticking out of the steering column which was spliced. If anyone knows off hand what it is, let me know.

I really dont have much experience with auto electronics, and could really use some advice. I have both the old and new keys, and the old steering column as well, if this helps.

Thanks

Re: New steering column. Car wont start.

your new key has the wrong resistance. Your car is looking for the resistance in the old key. Of course, now it has the wrong teeth.

ok guys here is the best I can do, short of comeing to your car and tracing it out and then fixing it. VATS is a bit** at best. the easiest thing to do is call a chip burner and have them cut you an eprom that disables the VATS system. pm me and I will pm back with the outfit that I use. they have been doing this since the begining of TBI. the cost was under $150

I tried the resistor thing.

I havent got it to work yet, even adding the key's resistance in series and in circuit. I'll give it a few more tries before I switch over to looking for a prom burner.

thanks a lot for the info, though.

Re: New steering column. Car wont start.

you can measure the resistance with an ohm meter and by the resistor we used to do that all the time with car alarms very simple you just read the ohm and put the resisitor on the COMP side of the wire NOT the column side in series and just leave the column side up under the dash

Re: New steering column. Car wont start.

For me vats was one of the first things I bypassed. I installed the new (used) column but it wont engage. If I use a pair of pliers and pull on the metal rod that engages the starter it will turn over, but I can't adjust the actual switch for her to kick over normaly I adjusted her up and down and all around but still no help. I tested the switch using an ohm meter and it works Maybe I just need a different coulmn

I had the exact same problem. I just had to adjust where the slider sat under the bolts and tighten them down (they're hard to get to) I currently have the brights switch disconnected - it's supposed to sit on those bolts, but I'm thinking about wiring it up to it's own button, instead of the blinker toggle.

Maybe dropping the brights will help, or put some loctite on there, so the switch attached to that metal rod wont move.

Anyways, I bypassed the VATS and everything works fine now. Thanks all for the info.
